*FG Shifts Agriculture Education Training to 80 Percent Practical, 20 Percent Theory*
The Federal Government is set to overhaul agricultural education in Nigeria’s polytechnics and colleges of education, with a new curriculum that will place greater emphasis on practical training and hands-on skills.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, unveiled the plan, which will raise the practical component of agricultural education to 80 per cent, while reducing theoretical instruction to 20 per cent.
The reform represents a shift from the previous 70 per cent theory-based model and is designed to equip students with practical competencies required for farming, agro-processing and agribusiness.
According to the initiative, agricultural education will focus more on field-based learning and immediate application of skills, with the aim of producing graduates who can create businesses and employment opportunities rather than depend solely on formal employment.
The reform will also strengthen training across key areas of the agricultural value chain, including crop and livestock production, processing and agribusiness. It is expected to introduce new national occupational standards designed to align graduates’ skills with the needs of the labour market.
The initiative is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader agenda to transform agriculture into a productive, skills-driven sector capable of generating employment, increasing food production and expanding economic opportunities for young Nigerians.
The Federal Government expects the practical approach to help reduce youth unemployment by equipping graduates with self-sustaining technical and entrepreneurial skills. It is also expected to improve agricultural productivity by increasing the number of young people with the practical capacity to participate directly in food production and other areas of the agricultural value chain.
The reform is ultimately aimed at repositioning agricultural education as a pathway to entrepreneurship, productivity and economic growth, while strengthening the contribution of young Nigerians to the country’s agricultural transformation.
