Senegal 🇸🇳 is producing Africa’s first locally made generic hydroxyurea treatment for sickle cell disease, Drepaf.
Pharmaceutical company Teranga Pharma is already working with Burkina Faso, Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire, while the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Cameroon have requested supplies.
Drepaf could help reduce Africa’s reliance on expensive imported treatments.
Hydroxyurea can reduce painful crises, hospital stays, blood transfusions and deaths.
