In this August 2025 edition of our Science and Technology Interview Series, we spotlight a rising academic whose influence is being felt globally—Dr. Muideen Remilekun Gbadamosi. At an age when many are still charting their paths, Dr. Gbadamosi has already distinguished himself in the fields of analytical and environmental chemistry, with remarkable contributions to sustainability research, inclusive education, and international collaboration. A Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA), he exemplifies how youth, expertise, and vision can converge to shape the future. With a PhD from the University of Birmingham, Dr. Gbadamosi’s research explores areas such as organophosphate pollutants, radioisotope contamination in soil and sediment, and the use of fuzzy logic in modeling complex environmental systems. Yet, his true distinction lies in his ability to integrate science with policy, education, and social impact. From assessing radiological risks in Nigerian quarry sites to championing equitable access to science education, Dr. Gbadamosi consistently brings depth, clarity, and purpose to his work. His recognition as an “Inclusive Educator” speaks to his commitment to student-centered learning and innovative teaching approaches. Currently a lecturer at Coventry University, with academic and research experience across both Nigeria and the UK, Dr. Gbadamosi is actively bridging the gap between the Global South and North, and between scientific discovery and societal needs. In this candid interview, he reflects on his formative years in Nigeria, his academic journey, and life as a young scholar in the diaspora. He shares insights on environmental justice, the future of science in Africa, and his mission to drive change where technology, education, and sustainability intersect. Dr. Muideen Gbadamosi’s story is more than one of early success—it’s a compelling vision of the future, led by intellect, purpose, and unwavering passion. 1. Can you take us back to your early years—your childhood and secondary school experience? What was it like growing up in your hometown, and how did those formative years influence your interest in science? Answer: I grew up in Owode – Yewa but started my primary education in a town called Ilobi in Yewa South LGA of Ogun State where I stayed with my late grandpa, a small town where community life was close-knit and resources were limited. My early childhood there was shaped by a strong sense of communal values -people knew each other well. There the classrooms were basic, yet the teachers were dedicated and instilled in us a discipline that became foundational for my academic journey. Later, my dad took me Owode Yewa in primary three which offered slightly broader opportunities including more structured teaching and more dedicated teachers but also have it set-back too as Owode-Yewas was characterised with smuggling activities at that time. That period was characterised by high smuggling activities with lots of smugglers dominating the society than those who went to school to have good education. Nevertheless, The transition exposed me to a wider range of subjects and sparked my curiosity, particularly in science especially with one of my teacher Mrs Badmus who picked particular interest in me as a local champion from Ilobi and now in Owode but she picked that interest in me because I am very good and we also bear the same surname, Gbadamosi is what some people changed to Badmus now. Some of my family members have changed theirs to Badmus but I like my grandpa so much. He is no more now but his impact on me remains forever as he used to sell books, pencil and pen in Ilobi and used to supply those teachers in credit to sell. The teachers make their profit from it and pay him back and the cycle continued like that. So virtually all the teachers in Ilobi at that time knows me through my grandfather.  Those formative years in Ilobi and Owode taught me perseverance and adaptability. Coming from a rural setting, I had to rely heavily on self-motivation, often studying under limited conditions. That experience shaped not only my interest in science but also my determination to pursue it further, eventually guiding my path toward higher education and my current academic career. 2. During your undergraduate studies, what were some pivotal moments or challenges that helped shape your path toward environmental and analytical chemistry? Answer: Thank you, I did not study Chemistry for my undergraduate degree. I graduated with first class in Petroleum and Petrochemical Science and as the overall best graduating students for my set in 2010 at the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), which is now a Federal University. There is strong link between Petroleum and Petrochemical Science and Environmenta/Analytical Chemistry as there is no way you could be a good petrochemical scientist without a strong foundation in chemistry, physics and mathematics, including biology. The pivotal moment is that I have gone through A ‘level called IJMB and I scored very high grade at the Kwara state polytechnic that qualifies me to study medicine at the university of Ilorin or any northern university that accepted IJMB at that time. IJMB is a very good programme coordinated by Ahmadu Bello University with a good syllabus that covered most undergraduate subject to at least 200 level thereabouts. So, I tried to secured admission at the Unilorin for two years and they did not offer me a chance to study medicine. I then decided to retuned home after the second year. The admission was dictated by number of factors such as to be from Ilorin or Kwara state, you have to know some big Professors etc and I did not know anyone. I decided to return home and re-strategies and that is how I found myself studying Petrochemical Science at TASUED. So having gone through A ‘level, all my 100L was like a revision to me, In fact, I only go to class for the purpose of attendance for most of the lectures in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology because I know where the lecturer is going and I do organised tutorial for my peers even if I did not attends

Meet Dr. Daodu Tirimisiyu Bamidele, Nigeria’s first Ph.D. holder in Science Laboratory Technology with a specialization in Microbiology/Virology Techniques—a title he wears not for fame, but as a beacon of inspiration to generations of aspiring scientists and entrepreneurs. Born in the heart of Ibadan into the humble household of a baker, young Bamidele’s earliest memories are of scrubbing bread pans for pocket change and learning life’s most enduring lesson: responsibility precedes reward. Fast-forward several decades, and that same boy has become a Chief Technologist, university educator, entrepreneur, community leader, and a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT). With over 25 years of rich experience in microbiology, immunology, and virology, Dr. Daodu has seamlessly blended his academic brilliance with grassroots impact—founding bakeries to empower local economies, mentoring students in innovation and self-reliance, and leading community security initiatives. His life is a compelling case study in discipline, innovation, and service. In this exclusive interview, Science and Tech Connect sits down with the visionary technologist and entrepreneur to unpack the journey from the ovens of Ode Aje to the laboratories of Ozoro—and discover what it truly takes to rise from humble beginnings and create a legacy built on science, service, and self-belief. Interviewer: In this edition of our special interview,we have the rare privilege of speaking with a trailblazer in the field of Science Laboratory Technology, Dr. Daodu Tirimisiyu Bamidele. From humble beginnings in a bakery in Ibadan to becoming the first Nigerian to earn a Ph.D. in Science Laboratory Technology with a specialization in Microbiology/Virology Technique, his story is a living testimony of grit, discipline, and vision. Welcome, Dr. Bamidele. Dr. Bamidele: Thank you. It’s an honor to share my journey. Q: Let’s start at the beginning. What was childhood like for you growing up in Ibadan? Dr. Bamidele: I was born on February 15, 1971, in Ibadan, Oyo State, specifically in Ode Aje, Oloolu, into the family of Hon. Alhaji M.K. Daodu, fondly known as Yíò sí dára. I didn’t grow up with a silver spoon. My earliest responsibilities involved cleaning bread pans at my father’s bakery. He always said, “No cleanliness, no pocket money.” That lesson in responsibility and discipline stuck with me throughout life. Q: That’s a powerful early foundation. How did it shape your academic journey? Dr. Bamidele: Tremendously. When I got admission into University, financial constraints meant I had to hustle—literally. I worked School holidays in Lagos as a bus conductor, car washer, and of course, back in bakeries. I often worked two shifts just to save enough for tuition and books. But I never saw these jobs as beneath me; they were building blocks. Q: And your academic path eventually led you to become a pioneer in your field… Dr. Bamidele: Yes. Today, I’m humbled to say I am the first Nigerian to earn a Ph.D. in Science Laboratory Technology specializing in Microbiology/Virology. I obtained my M.Tech and Ph.D. from the University of Port Harcourt and earlier received both Intermediate and Final Diplomas in SLT from the University of Ibadan. I’m also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), a licensed and practicing member with over 25 years of experience. Q: You’re currently the Chief Technologist at the University of Science and Technology, Ozoro. Tell us more about your role there. Dr. Bamidele: It’s a multifaceted role. I oversee lab operations, train and mentor technologists, support research, and contribute to curriculum development. I’m also involved in entrepreneurial education, helping students build innovative mindsets and self-reliant skillsets. It’s not just about the lab—it’s about shaping well-rounded professionals. Q: Speaking of innovation, you’re also a successful entrepreneur. How did that begin? Dr. Bamidele: During my NYSC in Ozoro, Delta State, I identified a gap in the local bread market. I used my bakery experience to co-found FIG Bakery, later expanding with WIBO’s Bakery. My goal was more than profit—I wanted to provide quality bread and create youth employment. I partnered with a local woman who eventually became my mother-in-law. The journey wasn’t smooth—power issues, skepticism, sourcing materials—but with discipline and integrity, we built trust and grew. Q:  How would you describe your Ph.D. journey in a nutshell? Dr. Bamidele Thank you very much. In a nutshell, my Ph.D. journey was both challenging and deeply fulfilling. It wasn’t a smooth ride, but it was worth every step. There were sacrifices and setbacks, but also many moments of growth, discovery, and purpose. It truly transformed not just my academic standing but my entire outlook on perseverance and resilience. Q: The University of Port Harcourt is known for pioneering the postgraduate SLT program. How did that influence your experience? Dr. Bamidele: That uniqueness was a great motivator. Being in the first Nigerian University to offer a postgraduate degree in Science Laboratory Technology gave my work added relevance. It created an intellectually rich environment where laboratory-based research was highly valued, especially in its applications to health and science development. I was proud to be part of that history. Q: You mentioned some major setbacks. Can you share one that stood out and how you managed to bounce back? Dr. Bamidele: Certainly. One of the toughest moments was when another department’s HOD seized all 100 Wistar rats I had purchased for my research, along with two bags of feed — without explanation. That was a huge emotional and financial blow. But with the help of a good friend, Mr. Chima from SLT, and the unwavering support from my HOD, Dr. Mrs. Akoma, and my supervisors, I was able to recover and continue. I actually got the nickname “BigBen” during my NYSC, when I participated in the Mr. Macho contest during the two-week orientation camp. Interestingly, the name stuck and has since become more prominent than any other nickname I’ve had. Over time, “BigBen” has come to reflect not just a name, but my personality, work ethic, and even my spiritual life. It embodies the strength, consistency, and presence I strive to bring into every area of my life and career. I was born and raised in Lagos, although I occasionally visited Agbor during holidays. From a young age, I was deeply fascinated by electronics and often spent time dismantling gadgets purely out of curiosity, even if I couldn’t always put them back together. This hands-on interest led me to apprentice briefly at a local radio repair shop after secondary school. Despite this passion for electronics, my initial ambition was to become a medical doctor, and I even began studying medical textbooks while trying to gain admission into medical school. However, my career path changed after a significant encounter with Dr. John Taiwo Adekolawole, who would later become the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Ede. He advised me to consider studying Physics with Electronics instead of pursuing medicine. His mentorship became a turning point that shifted my focus and laid the foundation for the professional journey I follow today. 2. Education & academic excellence . 3. Research & breakthroughs      What can you say about your life and Science Laboratory Technology as professional course I am proud to identify as a scientist, and studying Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) has played a pivotal role in shaping not just my career but my entire outlook on life. SLT is more than a course, it is a training ground for scientific thinking, precision, innovation, and resilience. It instilled in me a deep attention to detail, a sharp analytical mindset, and the discipline to approach problems methodically and creatively. One of the greatest strengths I’ve developed through SLT is resourcefulness. In a world where solutions are often expected despite limited resources, SLT taught me how to maximize what’s available to deliver tangible results. It is a program that demands both theoretical understanding and hands-on application, and that unique blend helped me bridge the gap between abstract science and real-world challenges. SLT also opened the door for me to explore diverse scientific fields, from chemistry to microbiology, instrumentation to electronics. This multi-disciplinary exposure laid a strong foundation for my transition into fields like physics, electronics, and research and development. Today, as a postdoctoral researcher, innovator, and academic leader, I draw heavily on the training and mindset instilled in me through SLT. More importantly, SLT taught me how to see problems as opportunities. I don’t just walk past societal or technological issues; I instinctively think of how science can solve them. Whether it’s developing a nuclear radiation detector during my HND, publishing cutting-edge research, or leading national innovation projects, my scientific curiosity, rooted in SLT, has been my compass. Beyond technical competence, SLT also helped shape my values: integrity in data handling, respect for scientific ethics, and a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. It also gave me a strong sense of identity and confidence. Despite societal misconceptions that sometimes relegate polytechnic-based courses, I have never seen myself as inferior. SLT gave me the boldness to compete and win on both national and international stages. SLT has not only prepared me for a successful scientific career but has also positioned me to contribute meaningfully to society. Has SLT impacted your life positively?  What advice do you have for professional colleague in the field of SLT and the managers of SLT in Nigeria SLT has not just impacted my life positively, it has transformed it. It gave me a strong scientific foundation, nurtured my curiosity, and empowered me with the skills to innovate, teach, and lead. From developing my first research project as a student to publishing cutting-edge articles and managing institutional research, every step of my journey has been influenced by the depth and versatility of my SLT background. The course sharpened my analytical thinking and practical skills, equipping me to contribute across multiple fields, whether in physics, electronics, material science, or IoT-based innovation.
