Sci &Tech Connect Blog: You served as the National President of the National Association of Science Laboratory Technology Students (NASLTES) from 2004–2005. What leadership lessons did that experience teach you, especially during challenging times?
Comrade Sam Temple: My tenure as National President of NASLTES was a defining period in my life. It taught me that leadership is fundamentally about service, responsibility, and sacrifice. As a student leader, I learned that challenges are inevitable, but the ability to listen, build consensus, and remain focused on a common goal is what distinguishes effective leaders. I also discovered the importance of resilience, patience, and integrity in navigating difficult situations. Those lessons continue to guide me in every leadership position I occupy today.
Sci &Tech Connect Blog: You are widely regarded as a born leader who succeeded in difficult terrains. What personal values and principles have guided your leadership journey over the years?
Comrade Sam Temple: The values that have sustained me include honesty, integrity, hard work, accountability, and a commitment to excellence. I strongly believe in leading by example rather than by mere instruction. My ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and motivate people toward a common vision has also been instrumental. I have always maintained a positive attitude, remained open to learning, and embraced challenges as opportunities for growth. Above all, I believe that leadership should create opportunities for others to succeed.
Sci &Tech Connect Blog: At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, you have broken several records, including becoming the first Science Laboratory Technologist to serve as a member of a university Governing Council in Nigeria. How did you achieve this historic milestone, and what does it mean to the profession?
Comrade Sam Temple: Breaking records begins with determination, self-belief, and a commitment to seeking knowledge. Every achievement in life is built on the efforts and sacrifices of others, and I strongly believe that ambition is the driving force behind extraordinary accomplishments. History and victory are closely linked, and those who aspire to make history must be willing to challenge existing limitations.
When I examined our profession, I noticed that many Science Laboratory Technologists had become comfortable with the status quo. I believed that technologists should not only excel in the laboratory but also aspire to leadership positions where they can influence policy and decision-making. With this conviction, I set out to break barriers and demonstrate that our profession has the capacity to contribute meaningfully beyond technical operations.
My journey to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Governing Council was the culmination of a twelve-year vision. Along the way, I supported and mentored others who successfully became council members before deciding it was time to bring my own experience, leadership capacity, and commitment to institutional development to the role. Through years of professional excellence, staff advocacy, entrepreneurship development, and active participation in university affairs, I built the credibility and visibility necessary to earn the trust of my colleagues.
In an election contested by nine candidates, I emerged with the highest number of votes, becoming the first member of NAAT-UNN to serve on the Governing Council. This achievement was not merely a personal milestone; it was a recognition of the growing relevance and leadership potential of Science Laboratory Technologists in higher education governance. It demonstrates that our profession has evolved beyond laboratory operations and can contribute significantly to policy formulation, institutional management, and national development.
I always remind my colleagues that if I could achieve this milestone, others can do the same. Having a Laboratory Technologist serve on the highest decision-making body of a university sends a powerful message that our profession possesses the competence, vision, and leadership capacity to shape the future of our institutions and society.

Sci &Tech Connect Blog: As Chairman of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), UNN Branch, what are the key issues affecting academic technologists in Nigerian universities today?
Comrade Sam Temple: As Chairman of NAAT UNN,, my leadership has been driven by a commitment to breaking the culture of mediocrity and promoting excellence through intellectual engagement, innovation, and strategic collaboration. We have leveraged knowledge, professionalism, and collective expertise to advance the interests of academic technologists within the university system. Recognizing that sustainable progress requires partnership, we have worked closely with other staff unions and stakeholders in academia to complement one another’s efforts in promoting institutional development. Through continuous learning and engagement alongside our colleagues, we have strengthened the role of academic technologists in teaching, research, innovation, and practical training.
Under my leadership, we have fostered a culture of research and scholarly productivity by facilitating the formation of several research groups among our members. We are also taking deliberate steps toward establishing a NAAT UNN Journal, which will provide a platform for academic technologists to publish research findings, share innovations, and contribute to knowledge creation. These initiatives reflect our belief that academic technologists must move beyond traditional support roles and actively participate in the intellectual and research advancement of the university.
Despite these achievements, significant challenges remain. Academic technologists continue to face issues such as inadequate funding for laboratories and workshops, limited opportunities for professional development, poor infrastructure, and concerns relating to staff welfare and career progression. There is also an urgent need for universities to invest in modern laboratory technologies, emerging scientific tools, and digital skills development. Addressing these challenges will not only empower academic technologists to perform more effectively but will also enhance research output, stimulate innovation, and improve the quality of graduates produced by Nigerian universities. Through purposeful leadership, collaboration, and advocacy, we remain committed to advancing the profession and ensuring that academic technologists receive the recognition and support necessary to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Sci &Tech Connect Blog: Your career combines science, leadership, entrepreneurship, ICT, and administration. How have you managed to successfully balance these diverse responsibilities?
Comrade Sam TempleEntrepreneurship has become an essential component of modern society, cutting across vocational, professional, academic, and technological fields. Today, no profession can achieve its full potential without embracing entrepreneurial thinking and innovation. Entrepreneurship plays a vital role in solving human problems by transforming ideas into practical solutions that create value for individuals, organizations, and communities. When a person successfully identifies and solves a societal problem, they not only contribute to social development but also create economic opportunities for themselves and others. In this way, entrepreneurship serves as a powerful tool for wealth creation, job generation, innovation, and sustainable development.
My ability to balance multiple responsibilities has been strengthened by discipline, strategic planning, and a commitment to continuous learning. My background in Science Laboratory Technology provided me with a strong analytical and problem-solving foundation, while my experience at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development Research (CEDR) exposed me to entrepreneurship, information and communication technology (ICT), administration, and capacity development. Through these experiences, I have come to appreciate the interconnectedness of science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship in addressing societal challenges.
I prioritize tasks effectively, delegate responsibilities when necessary, and remain committed to lifelong learning. My involvement in coordinating ICT activities, vocational skills training, entrepreneurship programmes, and consultancy projects has enabled me to integrate these diverse areas into a cohesive professional approach rather than viewing them as separate disciplines. This integration has reinforced my belief that entrepreneurship is not merely a business activity but a mindset that empowers individuals and institutions to identify opportunities, solve problems, create value, and drive both social and economic transformation. Through this approach, I have been able to contribute meaningfully to human capacity development, innovation, and institutional growth while advancing my professional and leadership responsibilities.
Sci &Tech Connect Blog: Through your work at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development Research (CEDR), you have trained and mentored many young people. Why do you believe entrepreneurship and skill acquisition are important for Nigerian students?
Comrade Sam Temple: Entrepreneurship and skill acquisition are essential because they empower young people to become creators of opportunities rather than seekers of opportunities alone. In today’s economy, academic qualifications must be complemented with practical skills and entrepreneurial thinking. Through CEDR and various programmes such as the CBN Entrepreneurship Development Programme and NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Programme, I have witnessed how entrepreneurship transforms lives by fostering innovation, self-reliance, and wealth creation. Nigerian students need these competencies to remain competitive in a rapidly changing world.
Sci &Tech Connect Blog: You have participated in several national and international workshops, trainings, and consultancy projects. Which experience has had the greatest impact on your professional development and why?
Comrade Sam Temple: One of the most impactful experiences was my involvement in entrepreneurship development programmes in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and international entrepreneurship organizations. These engagements exposed me to global best practices in entrepreneurship education, leadership development, and business management. They broadened my perspective on how innovation and enterprise can drive economic growth and social transformation. Additionally, being part of the team that won prestigious international entrepreneurship awards significantly reinforced my commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.

Sci &Tech Connect Blog: As a member of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), how do you assess the progress and future of Science Laboratory Technology in Nigeria?
Comrade Sam Temple: The profession has made remarkable progress over the years, particularly in terms of professional recognition, regulation, and public awareness. The establishment and strengthening of NISLT have provided a platform for professional development and standardization. However, there is still room for improvement in areas such as laboratory infrastructure, research funding, technological advancement, and industry collaboration. I am optimistic about the future because there is increasing recognition of the critical role Science Laboratory Technologists play in healthcare, education, industry, environmental management, and scientific innovation.
Sci &Tech Connect Blog: Leadership often comes with pressure, criticism, and sacrifice. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in your leadership journey, and how did you overcome them?
Comrade Sam Temple: One of the biggest challenges has been managing diverse expectations while making decisions that serve the greater good. Leadership often requires difficult choices that may not satisfy everyone. I have also faced resource constraints, resistance to change, and the pressure of balancing professional responsibilities with leadership commitments. I overcame these challenges through effective communication, transparency, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to my principles. I have learned that criticism, when properly understood, can be a valuable tool for growth and improvement.
Sci &Tech Connect Blog: What advice would you give to young scientists, student leaders, and emerging professionals who aspire to make meaningful impact in science, technology, and national development?
Comrade Sam Temple: My advice is simple: pursue excellence, remain disciplined, and never stop learning.
