Sci& Tech connect blog:. What inspired you to become a Science Laboratory Technologist?
Dr (Mrs)Joel: I believed that fortune smiled on me when I was science-oriented during my Ordinary Level examinations. Armed with the requisite qualifications, I was able to apply when the University of Ibadan advertised for individuals wishing to be trained as Laboratory Technologists. In my simplicity, I applied and was admitted.
Sci& Tech connect blog: What challenges did you encounter during your formative years?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: Some of the challenges I encountered during those formative years were:
i. The stress involved in moving from one faculty lecture theatre to another.
ii. Going for secondment in the morning and then returning to class in the evening. This gave me the opportunity to meet and relate with both staff and students in various departments.
Sci& Tech connect blog: What motivated you to pursue higher academic qualifications?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: As Laboratory Technologists, we regularly demonstrated practical work for students and provided them with essential information for their studies. Very often, we discovered that these students later became academics and climbed the academic ladder. This challenged me to also pursue an academic path and contribute to knowledge at a higher level.
Sci& Tech connect blog: How were you able to remain focused and successful in your career journey?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: I can only say it was supernatural. God sustained me because I am a firm believer in divine possibilities. Happily enough, I was not involved in any extraneous activities or hindering lifestyles. This ultimately helped me to focus on my purpose with determination.

Sci& Tech connect blog: Which achievement gave you the greatest sense of fulfillment?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: It is interesting to note that every step of my achievement brought me immense joy. However, graduating with a PhD degree remains the crowning glory of all my efforts and certainly gave me the greatest sense of fulfillment. Every University Graduation Ceremony inspired me whenever I saw those receiving PhD degrees. Their convocation gowns were always desirable, and I often wondered whether I would one day wear one too. I am truly fulfilled that God made it possible.
Sci& Tech connect blog: What inspired your interest in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) research?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: What inspired my interest in AMR was the fact that many drugs and antibiotics are no longer effective in curing certain infections due to their overuse. Overall, my research programme provides scientific evidence that contributes to protecting human, animal, and environmental health while supporting Nigeria’s efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance through a comprehensive One Health framework.
Sci& Tech connect blog: What leadership lessons have you learned throughout your career?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: The leadership lessons I have learned are:
i. Leadership is not about giving instructions; it is about removing obstacles and building bridges.
ii. Leadership must be guided by ethics, professionalism, and integrity.
iii. Mentorship multiplies impact.

Sci& Tech connect blog: How has international exposure influenced your perspective on science?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: This has completely reshaped how I see science. Seeing laboratories where equipment, reagents, and data systems simply work made me realize that if they can do it there, why can’t we do it here? It strengthened my commitment to capacity building. If we develop our people and equip our laboratories adequately, Nigerian science will not only participate globally but will also lead from home.
Sci& Tech connect blog: How did you balance family responsibilities with career advancement?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: Expectedly, balancing both responsibilities was challenging. However, I remained purpose-driven while being patient with myself. I adopted the maxim, “Slow and steady wins the race.” God was also on my side because my husband and children did not pose serious challenges health-wise or otherwise. Above all, the university environment where I worked provided tremendous support in helping me achieve my goals.
Sci& Tech connect blog: What message do you have for young Science Laboratory Technologists and Microbiologists?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: To every young Science Laboratory Technologist and Microbiologist out there: your work matters more than you think. Do not remain static; keep moving forward. Lift others as you climb and mentor those coming behind you. Nigeria’s scientific future is in your hands. If I can do it, then you can too.

Sci& Tech connect blog: If given the opportunity, what aspect of the system would you reform?
Dr (Mrs.)Joel: If given the opportunity, one thing I would like to reform is bridging the gap between what we teach in our universities and what we practice in our laboratories. Many students graduate with strong theoretical knowledge but possess very little hands-on competence.
